July 2014 Newsletter

Hello everyone,

Happy Canada Day!!! The summer has officially begun!

On Tuesday, June 24th we had our Annual General Meeting and it was so nice to see many of our members join us for this meeting. Deb Hatch, our club president, welcomed everyone and gave a brief overview of the 2013/14 curling season. Bill Charlton introduced Alex Richardson, from BDO, who took us through the Financial Statements for the year ending April 30th, 2014. After the BDO presentation, Bill continued on with the proposed budget for the coming curling season. The majority of his presentation spoke around the rising costs, in particular heat and hydro. It was recommended and passed by the members present that there would be a small increase in fees to offset the rising costs of operation. Adjustments to the fee rates will be made to the registration form for the 2014/15 curling season and will be attached in future newsletters.

There were also reports given by the various sections and many donations were given to the club. We are very lucky to have so many members who give of their time to organize and run various fundraisers within each section that our members participate in. These dollars are greatly appreciated and I would like to recognize the various sections and their donation. The Tuesday Evening Women's league presented the club with a cheque for $3000.00, the Day Ladies Section donated $5,500.00, the Inter-Club League donated $400.00, the Curl and Dine donated $4500.00, and finally the Men's Section, in addition to the $1000.00 that was provided earlier in the year to run the Patron/President Bonspiel, presented the club a cheque for $800.00. Thank you again to all the above sections for their donations which we are pleased to announce will go toward the purchasing of new lounge chairs for the downstairs!!

Next on the agenda, President Deb Hatch, thanked Wylita Clarke for her service on the Board as the outgoing Past President and also thanked outgoing Board of Directors Emma Joyce and Ken Nichols for the years of service. She also welcomed Brenda Bonis, Terry Lenhardt, Tara Stephen and Andy Hiddink who will be acting as Directors for the coming 2014/15 curling season. The evening concluded with incoming Club President David Wells thanking Deb Hatch for her time as President of the club and presented her with a Pass Presidents' pin. Deb thanked the Board and the members for their support over her tenure as club president. She remains on the Board as Past President and is looking forward to next year.

Draw for Free Membership:

As you may recall, if you registered for next year by June 1st you were eligible to win back your membership fee. At the end of the Annual General Meeting outgoing President, Deb Hatch, drew the lucky name. There were 84 Early Bird Registrations and the lucky winner is Laura Whyte. Congratulations Laura! You will be curling next year for free!!! Thank you to everyone who pre-registered as this money helps us to cover costs over the summer until registration in September.

Golf and Steak Day:

Mark on your calendars Sunday, September 14th to go and enjoy nine holes of golf at Deer Run Golf Course and then return to the club for a BBQ dinner. Please see the attached form to register for the day.

Lindsay Fair Gates:

Once again the Lindsay Curling Club will be working the gates at the Lindsay Exhibition. The dates we are looking for volunteers are from Wednesday, September 17th to Sunday, September 21. If you are available to help us out and would like to volunteer at a specific time please contact Cathy Terry (705-878-4034) or Deb Hatch (705-878-5982). In the near future a telephone committee will be calling asking if you are able to help fill the 200 spots required to operate the gates during the Fair. Please consider helping out as this is a major undertaking and a major fundraiser for the club.

Around the Club:

We have been able to complete two out of the four projects planned for this summer. Firstly, the grassy area between the sidewalk and the Club has been dug up, graded and paved. Also, we have had the ice surface rear door installed and is operational. As you may recall, we were able to secure funding from the Lindsay Legacy C.H.E.S.T. Fund for these projects and we are extremely grateful for their generosity. Jim Scott has been busy painting the downstairs lounge area and he has also touched up spots where there has been nicks and scratches on the walls around the club. Thank you Jim!!!!

OCA Events:

I'm please to announce that the OCA has contacted the Lindsay Curling Club and informed us that we will be hosting the following events for the coming 2014/15 season; The Pepsi Junior Men and Women, Tim Hortons Master Men and Women, The Grand Masters, The Tim Hortons Colts and Trophy Regionals and the Travelers Club Championships. We look forward to hosting these events our great Club.

Our OCA Club Reps, John Baldry and Sue Ledoux, are willing to organize an OCA Instructional Clinic where representatives from the Ontario Curling Association come to our club and provide clinics for the beginner to experienced curler. If interested please notify the LCC office by email, phone or by dropping in to sign up. There will be a nominal fee for the course and the amount depends on the number of participants.
