September 2014 Newsletter

Hello Everyone,

Where has the summer gone??? It sure has been a different summer. We didn't have the heat and humidity that is characteristic of the months of July and August however, we had our share of rain which kept our lawns and gardens looking healthy and green. Don't forget that our curling registration is Wednesday, September 10th from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. We are planning to have the BBQ going so come on out and enjoy a hamburger and visit with folks you may not have seen since last April.

Around the Club:

The last week of August we had our new LED message board installed. With the new sign we will be able to let both members and non-members know what is going on at the Lindsay Curling Club. We will be able to inform folks of OCA events that are coming to the club as well as advertise our in-club bonspiels and the many fundraising bonspiels that not-for-profit organizations in our community have at our club. We will be able to advertise special events such as a "Pancake Breakfast" and "Steak Nights" to the community with hopes of getting folks to come into our club and see how great of a place it is.

Our new downstairs lounge chairs have arrived and they really add to the decorum that would be attractive to potential renters of the club for family functions, celebrations or receptions. The steel framed chairs have been stored down in the basement of the club for now and could be used as needed for extra seating during a curling event or an off season rental.

We have changed the location of the Emergency Exit door out on the ice surface. If you recall it was at the north end of the facility between sheets three and four. With the installation of the new back door the exit had to be moved to a new location at the end of sheet one on the west side of the club. Bill DeHaan along with Bob Widdis and Jim Scott volunteered their time to install the new emergency exit. Thank you guys for all your time and effort.

Registration will take place at the club on Wednesday, September 10 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. We will be having a BBQ as well, so come on down and enjoy a burger, register and catch up with members you may not have seen since curling ended back in March. Attached you will find the new registration form with the 2014/15 rates. Please feel free to print a copy of the form and drop off your completed form and payment to the club office or on registration night. We are always looking for new members so talk to co-workers, neighbours, friends and relatives and bring them down to the club and get them signed up in one or more of the various leagues we offer.

Again this year, is an introductory rate for new curlers of $200.00 for an unlimited membership. We are also hoping to expand on the Flex League that was introduced last year. This is an excellent opportunity for shift workers, work colleagues or busy moms and dads to join a team and not have to make a commitment of playing every week. A rotation bases could be arranged through the team members where as long as there are four players present to play each week. It is also advertised as a non-competitive league where the goal is to introduce this great sport to brand new members. Emma Joyce is convening this league again this year and if you have any questions regarding the "Flex League" please contact the LCC office or Emma herself.

On Wednesday, October 22 we will be our first ladies bonspiel of the year. We would like to thank Jeanette Finney and Ethel Windrem of Ethel's Hairstyling for sponsoring this event. There will be a sign up sheet at Registration night. For more information contact Bev McMillan (705-324-4710) or Pat Boyd (705-324-9422)

Golf and Steak Day:

The signups for golf are slowly coming in, however, I would like to let Brad Parsons of Deer Run know our final number by Friday, September 5th or at the very latest Monday, September 8th. We will also need to place our food order that week as well. If you intend on participating in this annual event please print out the attached registration form and drop it and your payment off at the club this week. You could also phone the club and let me know that you are planning to come to the golf day and I will fill out a form for you and collect payment on Sunday, September 14th at the course. If you would like to reserve a cart please advise and I will book one for you.

Lindsay Fair Gates:

Cathy Terry would like to thank everyone who has volunteered to help at the Fair gates. She is looking for more helpers particularly on Saturday and Sunday so if you are available for a few hours during the weekend please call Cathy Terry (705-878-4034). She would also like to remind all of the volunteers that if, for any reason, you are unable to work your shift please find a replacement and let her know who will be taking your place as she has a very limited spare list.
