October 2014 Newsletter
Wow, hasn't the last couple of weeks of weather been fantastic!! It's hard to believe that curling is just around the corner In fact, practice week is just 14 days away. Mark West started making ice last Thursday and has been in and out of the club adding more and more water and is now putting in the lines, hacks and under ice advertising. With the recent stretch of warm weather the plant has been working overtime to allow Mark to continue flooding. He certainly deserves a lot of credit for all the hours he puts in preparing the ice for start up. Some of you may remember Mark's son, Nathan, he has also been in helping his dad with the flooding and ice preparation. We thank them both for all their hard work.
On September 10th we held registration at the LCC. There were many new faces and we welcome you all to the Club. Your forms have been processed and entered into our system. I have been sending out the tentative roster to various convenors and they have been very busy preparing their leagues. There are several people who registered and played last year and have not been in to register for this year as of yet. If you are planning to curl again this year please drop by the club with your filled out forms as soon as possible as many of the leagues will be organizing skip's meetings in the very near future. If the club is closed drop off you registration form through the mail slot so I can at the very least register you and give your name to the convenors. Your payment can be collected during practice week or the first few weeks of the curling season. You could also phone or email the club to indicate your intention to join again this year and inform me of the leagues you wish to play in so that you are not left off the list.
I would like to thank everyone who helped out during registration from the ladies at the registration desk, to all of the convenors who answered questions pertaining to their leagues and recorded sign ups, to the helpers in the kitchen, to those who manned the BBQ, to Henry Jetten and Betty Goard for their donations of tomatoes and Tim Bits, to Bob Widdis at the bar, to Bill Charlton and June Widdis for keeping track of all the payments, to the ladies at the "Get Acquainted Bonspiel" sign up and finally to our greeters Dave Wells (LCC President) and Terry Lenhardt (Women's President). It was a great turn out!!!!
Lindsay Fair Gates:
The Lindsay Fair has come and gone and as usual many LCC members volunteered their time to help out at the gates. We need to thank some individuals who were instrumental in the organization of this fund raising event. Cathy Terry spent countless hours with her phoning committee (Marilyn O'Reilly, John Baldry and Deb Hatch) contacting members and slotting them into different shifts. It is a huge undertaking and we all appreciate the work Cathy has done for us again this year. We also need to thank Bob Widdis who was there every day coordinating the various volunteers into the different jobs. Thank you Bob! Last but certainly not least, "Thank you" to all 140 members who volunteered their time.
Cathy Terry asked that I include this message in this month's newsletter.....
"I would like to extend my sincere thanks to each and everyone, who came out, and braved the elements, to assist at the Lindsay Fair Gates this year. Also, a very special thanks to the people who stepped forward to cover for others who had last minute personal matters to attend to.
Thanks again, Cathy"
OCA -The Travelers Curling Club Championships:
The Travelers Curling Club Championships, the first OCA event of the year, begins Friday, October 24th and concludes on Sunday, October 26th at the Lindsay Curling Club. There will be teams from Zone 5 and also Zone 6 participating in this event. We have two entries from our own club entered in this competition. On the women's side we have the team of Brenda Burnett (Skip), Noreen Moore, Sue Ledoux and Marg Preston and on the men's side the team of Adrian Vander Wielen (Skip) Henry Jetten, Dan Reynolds and Anthony Jetten. We wish both teams the best of luck and know that they will represent us well. I am sure that they would welcome any support from our members so come on out and cheer them on!!!
As a result of Lindsay hosting this event the Friday Night Curl and Dine as well as the Friday Night Mixed Leagues will not be starting until the following Friday, October 31st. Please mark this on your calendar so that there will not be any confusion as to the first night of curling for the Friday Night Leagues.
Around the Club:
As our curling season is very busy many of the jobs and projects scheduled for the Club occur during the summer months. We have been able to complete the four major projects prior to the start of the new season. As mentioned in previous newsletters the back doors of the curling club have been replaced by an air tight insulated garage door. We removed the grass from the front of the club and replaced it with pavement. The new LED message board sign has been installed and is being used to provide messages to the public of what is happening at the club. The new score boards have been installed and they look great!! We had to replace the Emergency Exit door which is now located on the west side of the rink at the end of sheet one. We were also able to replace the downstairs lounge chairs with new chairs through the generosity of donations from various leagues.
Thank you to Bill DeHann who volunteered his time to install the new emergency exit door. There also had to be some wiring relocated for the emergency exit sign and we thank Dan Reynolds for taking care of that job. Painting took place throughout the club to freshen up the lounge areas, the basement and out on the ice surface walls. The membership needs to thank Jim Scott who spent many hours assisting and overseeing the jobs mentioned above. Thanks again Jim for all your work.
Many of our neighbouring Clubs have been sending us flyers with information pertaining to their bonspiels. There are two areas to find bonspiels to other clubs, one is in the Ladies change room/lounge and one upstairs beside the OCA bulletin board, there are clipboards that have the flyers attached. Remember for curlers to come to our spiels we need to also go to theirs. So have a look there are many to choose from.
Speaking of Bonspiels we have, at last count, five bonspiels over the next two months. "Ethel and Jeanette's Hairstyling Get Acquainted Ladies Bonspiel" starts us off on Wednesday, October 22nd.
